Warning Signs You Need Clutch Repairs
Clutches wear gradually so it can be hard to notice until things get bad. Watch for these:
- Clutch slipping – engine revs climb but the car does not accelerate properly
- Shuddering or juddering when pulling away from a stop
- Difficulty changing gears or gears crunching
- Clutch pedal feels soft, spongy or sitting differently than usual
- Squealing or grinding noise when pressing the clutch pedal
- Burning smell, especially in stop-start traffic or when hill starting
- Pedal biting point feels very high or has moved significantly
Any of these is worth getting checked. A slipping clutch that could have been caught early often ends up doing damage to the flywheel, which adds significantly to the repair cost.
How Long Does a Clutch Last?
It varies a lot depending on the vehicle, how you drive and the conditions you drive in. City driving with lots of stop-start traffic and hill starts wears a clutch faster than highway driving. As a rough guide many clutches last between 80,000km and 160,000km but some wear out much earlier and some last longer.
Driving habits make a big difference. Riding the clutch, slipping it excessively on hills, or towing heavy loads without the right clutch setup all wear things out faster. If you are not sure how your clutch is tracking, bring it in and we will have a look.
Clutch Upgrades for Towing and Heavy-Duty Use
We stock and fit clutch kits suited to a range of applications and can advise on what is appropriate for your vehicle and how you use it. We carry out clutch repairs and upgrades on all makes and models including passenger cars, SUVs, utes and 4WDs.

Frequently asked questions
How much does a clutch replacement cost?
It depends on the vehicle and what needs doing. A standard clutch kit replacement is one thing, but if the flywheel needs machining or replacing, or if there is hydraulic system damage, the cost goes up. Call us on 07 5495 6655 or bring it in and we will give you a clear quote before anything gets started.
How long does a clutch replacement take?
Most clutch replacements are completed within a day. Some vehicles take longer depending on how accessible the gearbox is. We will give you a realistic timeframe when you book in.
Can I still drive with a slipping clutch?
You can but it is not a good idea. A slipping clutch is getting worse every time you drive it and the heat it generates can damage the flywheel. What starts as a clutch replacement can become a flywheel replacement too if you leave it too long. Get it looked at sooner.
How do I know if it is the clutch or the gearbox?
Symptoms can overlap so it is not always obvious from the outside. A proper inspection on the hoist will tell you exactly what is going on. Bring it in and we will diagnose it properly before recommending anything.
Do you do clutch repairs on all vehicle types?
Yes. Passenger cars, SUVs, utes, 4WDs and fleet vehicles. All makes and models.
Do you machine flywheels on-site?
Yes. We have our own flywheel machining equipment at our Caboolture workshop. We do not send it out. That means faster turnaround and we know exactly what condition it is in when it goes back in your vehicle.
Can a clutch be repaired or does it need replacing?
It depends on what has failed. Hydraulic components like the master or slave cylinder can often be repaired or replaced independently without touching the clutch itself. But the clutch plate, pressure plate and release bearing are wear items that generally need replacing rather than repairing. When you bring it in we will tell you exactly what needs doing and what does not.
