Should you replace brake pads and rotors at the same time? Not always, it comes down to what kind of shape your rotors are actually in. Here’s how to know which situation you’re in before you spend money on parts you don’t need, or skip parts you do.

Quick answer: If your rotors are still within a safe thickness, aren’t warped and don’t have deep grooves, new pads on the existing rotors is fine. If you’re feeling pulsing through the brake pedal or steering wheel, hearing grinding, or the rotors are visibly scored or below minimum thickness, they need attention too, either machined back to true or replaced, depending on how much material’s left.

Why pads and rotors don’t wear out at the same rate

Rotors are built to last longer than pads. As a rough rule of thumb, most drivers get through two or three sets of pads before a rotor genuinely needs replacing, though that varies a lot depending on how you drive.
